Before we actually register your domain name, you have to find a domain name you like and one that is actually available. This really is a trial and error process along with your own creative juices. The point is to be highly relevant to your future website visitors. Say I’m a car guy looking for facts about the 1969 Ford Mustang. Sure, I could read a boring Wikipedia article or an article from some big brand website, but what if I found a website by someone who is so passionate about the 1969 Ford Mustang he created an entire site about it? By doing this, you’ll seed your site to gain followers, links, and shares on social media. By the time you’re ready to expand, you’ll already have a great reputation going for you.
Affiliate networks have a lot to offer merchants. Take, for example, the concept of a placement marketplace. This is a sort of platform that exists for both merchants and affiliates, helping them find each other. An affiliate program can automate processes such as posting opportunities, finding affiliates, tracking their sales, and paying for clicks and leads. This ensures busy merchants and vendors don’t stiff affiliates or make mistakes on their paychecks.
I do find the rejections strange sometimes, and you are SO right that often there doesn’t appear to be a good reason. Just yesterday I got a rejection from a program I applied to months and months ago citing that “my site wasn’t a good fit”, but I had actually been accepted to them through CJ Affiliate when I first applied and have been generating pretty consistent sales haha. Oh well! Guess we’ll never know the “inner workings” of it all, but thanks for reading Robert 😀
ClickBank allows you to join for free, and the approval process is virtually automatic, so it’s a great choice for people entering the affiliated game for the first time. ClickBank has a ton of information, including FAQs, walk-throughs, and videos available, so the barrier to entry is quite low. There’s also a (paid) program called ClickBank University with courses and assistance from experienced marketers.
I’m in the process of creating a new blog now and have decided on a niche to focus on. I’d like to implement affiliate marketing as soon as the blog launches. Was wondering if affiliate networks require those requesting to become affiliate marketers to have a certain number of followers before approving the request to join the affiliate program? Generally, what types of requirements have to be met when applying to join an affiliate network? I’d hate to apply then get rejected because I haven’t met the minimum requirements, if those exist. Thanks!
You may have heard of ClickBank, one of the oldest and most popular affiliate networks. A billion-dollar company, ClickBank specializes in digital products like e-books and software, as well as membership sites. If you are comfortable selling information and don’t want the management and administration hassles of “real” businesses, this may be a good starting point. Its commissions can be anywhere from 10% all the way to 75%.

When recommended affiliate marketing companies, we believe it is important for the affiliate marketing company to have access to a large network of publishers and affiliates. Not only does there need to be a volume of a variety of advertisers and publishers, there needs to be a variety of different industries being represented with enough volume to ensure there are matching publishers for the interested affiliates.
The easiest thing to do is to sign up for an affiliate marketing network like Commission Junction. They provide a marketplace where your affiliate program will be advertised to other affiliate marketers. They also provide the tracking software for your affiliates so you don’t have to build your own tracking system. In some ways this is better because it takes care of the trust issues. Affiliates are always suspicious of whether or not they’re getting credited for the sales they generate. By having an intermediary take care of transaction tracking and payments, the fear of being cheated is alleviated.
And what about joining another company's affiliate program? It's all about extra revenue. Think about your customers' needs: What other products or services would interest your site visitors? Join those affiliate programs. Affiliate programs can increase your sales with no upfront cost to you. It just takes a little time to plan your strategy and select the partners that will have the greatest impact on your business.
LongTail Pro has proven to be an indispensable asset when it comes to keyword research for me and my colleagues.I personally have been using the service for a while now, and have found over time that the data it gives around keywords tend to be more accurate than the other keyword tools on the market. I also introduced the LongTailPro to my colleagues who previously had been using other solutions, and now they absolutely swear by it! It is the go-to tool for keyword research at our agency. I highly recommend it.

As this article aims to cover affiliate marketing for beginners, here’s a little example for you. So, let’s assume John is an affiliate. He has a website which is all about skateboarding. On it, he has a blog where he shares videos of his latest stunts, pictures of the parks he’s visited, and in-depth reviews of the best and worst skateboards he’s ever used.
Melissa!! Reaching through the computer to hug you right now. I used to use affiliate links a lot, but had gotten away from it because they weren’t worth all the extra effort. I logged in to my Google Affiliate account after reading this post and found $138!!!! waiting for me. Thank you so much! Maybe I should update a few of my links and old posts!

The Content Formula answers the biggest question currently on marketer’s minds: what is the ROI of content marketing? This book provides a step by step guide for marketers, and is divided into three parts: how to build the business case for content marketing, how to find the budget to establish a new content marketing program, and how to measure content marketing success in business terms. With unused and wasted content costing B2B marketers alone a whopping $50 billion a year, the time to take a step back and identity problem areas is now so departments can focus on the areas that yield the most benefit to the bottom line. The Content Formula establishes a way for marketers to prove the exact return on investment they get from content marketing, highlighting its usefulness in any marketer’s toolbox.
Promote products that are stepping stones to products you will create in the future. This is a bit more advanced, but is a great way to think ahead. Amy Porterfield suggests thinking about the first thing your followers will need in order to get started with what you provide. For example, I teach people how to blog, so the first thing they need to start a blog is hosting. That’s why I am an affiliate for hosting.
Charles Ngo is one of the most well known and respected figures in affiliate marketing. Since 2008, he and his team have generated over 8+ figures in commissions through Facebook, mobile, and ecommerce. He shares his affiliate marketing insights at CharlesNgo.com. When he’s not working, he loves to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and exploring New York City.

Know when (and when not) to use Viglinks and Skimlinks. If you applied to an affiliate program but were denied, you might be able to still be an affiliate for that advertiser through a secondary affiliate program like VigLink or Skimlinks. Basically, they themselves are affiliates and will split their affiliate commission with you if you put their affiliate link in your content for an advertiser. Obviously, the commission rate is lower for you in this case, so if you ever are accepted into the advertiser’s affiliate program directly, immediately switch from using VigLink / Skimlinks affiliate links to your own.
VigLink is an intermediary platform, so it can serve as a backdoor for affiliates who have previously been banned/suspended from working with other affiliate programs like Amazon. And while you can choose specific merchants or offers, VigLink can be set up to work automatically by scanning your published content and dynamically generating affiliate links, making it a great choice for established content producers who are looking for a simpler way to generate revenue via an affiliate program.
In order to track the source of traffic, the merchant provides the affiliate with a coded link to the merchant's website. The merchant may also place a cookie -- a small text file -- on the customer's computer when he clicks the affiliate's link. The length of time this cookie is valid may vary from 24 hours to the lifetime of the cookie. The longer the cookie length, the more chance the affiliate has of being paid for future sales to the same customer. However some users regularly delete all cookies from their computer.
Affiliates should also be careful about who they endorse and why. This is especially true at the beginning when it will seem like the right move to say ‘yes’ to any potential partner. But selling or endorsing a problem just for money will may cause your audience to lose respect for you. The same could be said for selling too many products, or for endorsing a product that has a tarnished reputation.
If you’re a blogger, start by going through your analytics and finding your most popular posts. In Google Analytics (GA) you can find these pages by going to your GA Dashboard > Behavior > Site Content > All Pages. Examine the ones at the top of the list that bring in the most traffic. Are there any affiliate products or services you can naturally include in them?

Competition is not competition if you add something so different from your competitors that it puts you in a new segment altogether. One example Kim provides in this brilliant book is of movie theaters in Europe that have started offering childcare while parents watch a movie. This entertainment + childcare setup is totally different than the competitors and thus puts the theater chain implementing it in a different realm than other theaters. What can you add to your current offering that will totally change the way you’re perceived in contrast with the competition?

The best way to think about affiliate marketing is quality over quantity. There are a lot of small websites that will promote your product, but the key is finding a small number of partners that will deliver conversions. For example, an equity management services firm has over 20,000 affiliates in its system, but only about 25 affiliates generate 85 percent of revenue.
Pat believes that affiliates, and businesses as a whole, should be both ethical and transparent. This means that Pat only recommends products that he’s passionate and familiar about. He also uses four concepts when working with affiliate networks: provide massive value, earn massive trust, learn and understand the needs and wants of your followers, and lead and teach by example.
Flexoffers.com is another well-known affiliate that we have included in our top best affiliate programs. This program is well-established affiliate marketer that has gained a lot of reputation because of offering big offers on digital products, keeping their affiliates relevant. When a company offers large offers, more clients are likely to purchase, meaning more money to the merchants and affiliates.
Smart tips, Elna! That’s exactly what I did with BoardBooster – I created a post that showed people (with screen shots etc) exactly how I was using it to increase my Pinterest engagement. In my opinion, that’s one of the best ways to create affiliate sales – not only are you providing something that’s truly helpful to your readers, you’re showing them exactly how it works.
Maybe you have a hobby you’d like to earn money from, such as RC airplanes, playing an instrument, star gazing or teaching people how to develop a better golf swing? Or maybe you’d rather teach people a professional skill such as how to invest in the stock market, become an actor or actress, start a self-storage company or how to create a kick-butt resume that will “WOW” any employer.
For example, if you were an Amazon affiliate and linked to some of your favorite books with affiliate links, if someone clicked on a link and purchased that book, you’d get a small commission. Even cooler is that some affiliates have 30-day cookies, meaning that if someone didn’t buy right then but bought 20 days later (and bought other stuff too), you get a commission for all of that. While most affiliates pay per sale, some pay per lead as well.
Now that you’ve decided on a niche and affiliate network, you probably have a good idea of the products you’re going to feature on your affiliate site. Before you go on a publishing spree, make sure you create a workable strategy and put it on writing. This doesn’t have to be perfect, since you can adjust it as you go along, but it makes a whole lot of difference if you follow some sort of guide.
Ahmad, Great post and great information. I have some more specific questions for you relating to my personal company and how affiliate programs can tie into it. Is there a chance we could talk sometime soon? I think you may have the answers to several of my questions on whether affiliate marketing is what I am looking for or not. And if it’s not what I am looking for I think you can direct me in the direction I need to go.
Mistake #2: Using the “They must not be my people” excuse to be spammy. I’m not a fan of this common tactic. Here’s how it works: people send a huge number of sales/promotional emails to their list with no warning and with no easy way to opt out. When people complain or unsubscribe, they put it on them (“Oh well, they aren’t my type of subscriber anyway…”), instead of taking responsibility for the spam (let’s call it what it is). What ever happened to “treat others the way you want to be treated”?
A huge takeaway in this book is that connectors win. Sanders refers to people that connect people to other people and big ideas, even when it’s of no obvious value to them, as ‘lovecats.’ By doing this, and sharing any and all value that you find you demonstrate your own value, and you’ll receive exceptional feedback and an association with the positive effects they received from the connection or information you shared. An example of this is sharing the big ideas of your favorite books.
I’m not sure of the exact reasons why I started to rank, but I have a few theories. It was a very long, honest, and informative post on the subject. I believe this made it stand out from all the other reviews in which the author just wrote up a basic summary of what it’s about. It also is one of the latest reviews on the book, so perhaps google freshness has something to do with it. I haven’t done any linkbuilding on this page and it currently sits at #2.

Totally agree with your opinion on affiliate marketing. I’m in the same space myself and can tell you what it feels like to earn $1000 commissions while literally sitting on the sofa watching TV. It is absolutely mind-blowing. High-ticket commissions are what sets apart the affiliate marketers that scale their business up to six or even seven figures to the ones that only make a few thousand a month. I run a website based on digital marketing an entrepreneurship. You should check out our affiliate program – it is guaranteed to blow your mind. 🙂

Thanks for the tips, Tiffany! It was very helpful. I just started my blog about a month ago and just signed up for Shareasale. I do have a further question. Do you know what blog post on Shareasale’s blog, gives me the best information in getting started and what I need to do? I am finding it hard to navigate my way through and really get an idea of the best way to start. It’s all quite overwhelming. Or is there a post that you have to guide me better?
The topic you choose must have enough depth that you can create a lot of content for it. This is important for building an authoritative site, for search engine optimization, and most importantly, for the end user. If you don't have enough content about a topic, you're not going to be taken very seriously as an authority on the topic and it's unlikely you can convince someone to make a purchase from you.

Out of all the sessions I’ve been to at blog conferences, one of most enlightening ones was at the Type A Parent Conference. Sure, many bloggers might not bother to read session re-caps in general. But when I tell you that two of the panelists for the affiliate marketing session make over $20,000 a year without giant traffic numbers, you’ll want to keep reading.
When promoting affiliate offers, just make sure you are fully aware of all the terms and conditions attached to your affiliate program. Some programs can be strict about how they allow you to promote their products. For example, some may limit you to banner ads and links only, while others will allow you to use paid advertising, but won't allow email marketing.
Affiliate marketing helps publishers get rewarded for the role they play in shopping journeys. If a publisher adds an affiliate link to a merchant in their content, they’ll receive a commission for every sale driven to that merchant as a direct result of someone clicking on the affiliate link. Publishers can add as many affiliate links to an article as they like, but they will need to build each individual link manually which can be time consuming.

With website builders, you get what you pay for. While they have plenty of free templates, more professional-looking websites will always cost more money. However, this investment could be worth it, especially as a website is one of the few startup costs for affiliate marketers. The social media profiles you develop are dependent on your niche and target market.
JVZoo works exclusively with digital products, primarily e-commerce, online courses, and internet marketing offers. Because there are no limits placed on the number of links, buy buttons, or calls to action on a website, JVZoo can sometimes be somewhat low quality both in terms of offers as well as products. Nonetheless, it has proven itself to be a fierce competitor to companies like ClickBank.
If you succeed, it will be because you were able to do something most people can’t do, which is having the patience to put in lots of hard work now in order to have that pay off (hopefully) later on. I can promise you, it is so worth it. It took me 2 years from the time I first started blogging to now earning a passive six-figure income as I travel the country.

I would personally agree with linkshare.com as a great affiliate marketing platform to join as a publisher. Here’s why. Back in 2005 when I knew nothing about affiliate marketing and was using blogger.com as a free blogging platform without any experience whatsoever and joining Walmart.com as my first official affiliate program, I was able to insert Walmart affiliate in its in my blogger blog and earn a $72 commission. I was onto affiliate marketing for life from there.

Yes is the short answer. Any time you are planing on generating money, you should have a plan. No plan means no real focus. There may be some 1/1000 percent of a chance you will succeed, but I haven't met them yet. If you have already started and have generated an income, record how. Doing so will give you material for use in expanding your business faster.
You can put up banners on your site, to promote your affiliate offers. Most affiliate programs will usually provide their own creatives when you sign up for their offers. All you have to do is insert the banner on a highly trafficked page (your affiliate tracking is usually embedded within the code). Banner ads in the right locations can do a great job of driving sales.
Promote products at various price points. Even the little products (like Amazon ebooks) add up. If there is a truly useful product on the pricier side, it can still be worth the promotion even if only a few people buy it. If you’ve used a product of exceptional quality and it’s a good investment, or if it’s a product that’s unique, specialized or one-of-a-kind, go for it.
On one hand, long and ugly affiliate tracking links are a straight giveaway to people that you want to sell them a product (and people may be uncomfortable clicking on them). Therefore, making your link shorter and "nicer" looking will it give a more professional appearance. One of my favorite plugins for making links look "pretty" is the Pretty Links WordPress plugin.
Once your hosting is set up, you need to install a content management system (CMS) for your site. We recommend WordPress because it is easy to use and a beginner (like you!) can quite quickly figure out how it works. Most good hosting providers will have a one-click install option for WordPress, which means it will only take you a couple of minutes and you will have WordPress installed on your site.
Mr. Doe intends to use a high impact marketing campaign that will generate a substantial amount of traffic to www.mysite.com. These strategies include the use of search engine optimization and pay per click marketing. The Company’s web development firm will place large amounts of linking text on the Company’s website. For instance, when a person does a Google search for a specific product, the Company will appear on the first page of the search. This strategy is technically complicated, and the Affiliate Marketing Website will use a search engine optimization firm to develop the Company’s visibility on a non-paid basis. Management expects that a SEO firm will place large amounts of linking data and text specific keywords into the business’s website, which will allow the Company to appear more frequently among search engines. A majority of web portal and search engine companies use very complicated algorithms to determine a website’s relevance in relation to a specific keyword. SEO firms place text and tags on the website to increase the rank of a specific website. Additionally, the Affiliate Marketing Website will use several pay methods for increasing the Company’s visibility. This strategy is expensive, but the results can be phenomenal if this marketing strategy is properly executed. These advertisements appear along the border and side of a website, and each time a person clicks on the website, a small fee ranging from fifty cents to one dollar is charged to the Company’s account. This strategy will be used until the Company gains momentum.

For those new to this powerful online merchandising concept, affiliate programs work as intermediaries between the affiliate marketers who will sell products and services and the merchant who provides those products and services as well as the affiliates programs.  Merchants work with affiliates to help get their products or services to their consumers.

Fun fact: the “Amazon Associates” program actually has a different program for a variety of different countries, meaning yes, Amazon.COM has a different program than Amazon.CA, and Amazon.CO.UK, and Amazon.FR, etc. etc. If you want to, you can sign up for all of them without being residents of these countries. What’s important is where your readers are from.
This book talks about the great cost of losing trust, and how much of a difference it makes when a company can maintain trust with clients and customers by making sure that expectations are matched to what the outcome will be. Honesty is a major advantage in business and marketing because people respect commitment and competency over fluff and over-promising.
3) Number of Affiliate Links and Product Features Posted – Every time you post a product feature with its respective affiliate link, you get a chance for a commission. The more posts you publish with different products (and affiliate links), the likelihood of someone buying from your links increase over time. Now imagine you’ve religiously added a unique product post daily for an entire year – you have 365 links that are readily available for your readers to click.
Wow. Thank you for parting the mists of the mystery of affiliate marketing. I was drowning in vagueness and confusion for a few weeks there and now I feel like I have enough information to at least create a strategy around when I might want to start. I had no idea that it was so country-specific, which is important because I get just as many hits from European countries as I do the U.S.

Same here, this post kind of fell from the sky at such a great time. Been building a great community of readers over the years but reached a point where I’m losing money maintaining the site and newsletter. As you said, the ads don’t bring much -ironically I use Adblocks too but affiliate marketing always seemed like a weird and opaque subject. I’ve read many of Chris Guillebeau’s books in the last few months (this is how I discovered your site actually!) and I didn’t realize he had affiliate links for instance. Your post opened up a new window of possibility for me. Still need to process everything and do the work behind but a big thank you to you Sean!
The truth is that companies now need Affiliate marketers, more than we need them. The budget for affiliates is so much less than a conventional marketing budget and they don't need to pay it out before there is a sale. One thing has not changed, cash flow is king, so why pay for Marketing before you sell a product when you can pay someone after they have promoted your product and a sale is made ?

Not long ago, my company worked with a coupon system supplier that used an inefficient automated affiliate process. The business managed and tracked its affiliates somewhat but cut some internal players out of the process, which slowed down follow-through and caused most creation, distribution, and payments to be handled on a manual, as-needed basis.

The Affiliate Marketing Website will place advertisements through its online platforms to promote ecommerce products sold by other companies. The business will receive commissions of 40% to 60% on all products sold by third parties. The business will generate revenues from static and dynamic advertisements that generate revenues on a per 1000 impressions basis while concurrently earning other income from affiliate partner revenues. The third section of the business plan will further describe the services offered by the Affiliate Marketing Website. The third section of the business plan will further discuss the operations of the website.

Great stuff here Sean – thanks for all of these insights and sharing some best practices when it comes to affiliate marketing. I’ve never been comfortable giving it a shot, but after reading this post and your perspective on how and when to do it, I may just have to give it a try. Especially considering I’m already mentioning and recommending services and products on my site, I’m just not getting the potential rewards associated with doing so. Thanks again.

This is the most popular payment offered by most of the affiliate programs. Under this program, the affiliate marketers earn commissions from the merchant each time they will send a client to the merchant website, and that client makes an actual purchase. Various affiliate programs offer a specific percentage of the sale as commission while others will pay you a fixed rate for every sale.
MaxBounty works exclusively with digital products, usually about giving one’s email or signing up for a newsletter. MaxBounty has CPA, Pay-per-call, and CPL campaigns that you can choose from. MaxBounty is involved in a large number of verticals, including market research, real estate, social games, finance, dating, and diet, but is primarily designed for marketers seeking to acquire new leads.
VigLink works a bit differently than other affiliate programs in that it is specifically designed for bloggers. Instead of affiliates picking and choosing which merchants to work with, VigLink uses dynamic links that automatically change to work with merchants that VigLink has determined are offering the highest conversation rates and/or commissions at any given moment.

In this example, a blogger might put this link on their blog to try to get their readers to click through to your “blue widget” page and hopefully buy something. If the visitor who clicks on this link actually buys something, affiliate tracking software will automatically (usually – depends on what system you are using) pay your affiliate a percentage of the sale.

Why should you read this book? This book sheds light on how to stay top of mind with your audience and lead your industry. The author explains how he built both his brand and his business relationships through helpful and engaging content. The book provides tips on how to earn trust with your audience with digital marketing so that you become the first choice for your audience. Successful businesses and leaders have one thing in common: their names come top of mind when people think about their particular industries.

Affiliate marketer or a publisher who is an individual who will publish the advertisement on his web page blog and advertise the product for the business. His remuneration for advertising the product solely depends on the how he can push his webpage or blog further. How famous he is or what topics he blogs about and well-known his blog will determine how many people will visit his site. He gets commission for marketing the product if the person visiting his site either clicks or buys the product depending on the agreement between him and the business.
Why should you read this book? This book discussed how affiliate or performance marketing is a misunderstood term and basically represents something positive: paying only for marketing that delivers actual, quantifiable results or outcomes. The author takes a look at how affiliate or performance marketing evolved, how it impacts the changing digital marketing landscape, and how it can be used to improve your organization. Discover how digital marketing is focused on creating transparent partnerships and relationships that improve your company’s reach and revenue.
The basic concept is signing up for an affiliate marketing network and finding products that are within your niche. Once you find the product that is within your niche, you click on the hoplink to add your affiliate ID to the product link. When a reader clicks on your hoplink and buys the item, you get a commission for the sale. Although this sounds simple, there are a few things that you need to know before you get started.

Don’t go insane and join a million at once… think first about what would make sense for you to endorse. If you’re a travel blogger for instance, becoming an affiliate for hotels, tours and travel gear may be appropriate. Most companies will have an affiliate program, or be part of an affiliate network. Your best bet would be a quick Google: “company + affiliate program”.
Another great place to add affiliate links is on your high traffic pages. Take a look through your analytics to see which pages get the most views, and add a strong call to action on those pages. For instance, if I have a post about how to find a WordPress theme, I might end it with something like this: “If you’re looking for an SEO-friendly theme, here is one I recommend.”
I really hope this tutorial on how to start an affiliate marketing blog was helpful. There are so many people who want to start affiliate marketing but feel overwhelmed at the thought of building a website. I hope this made that process easier for you. No doubt, you will run into issues and have so many questions along the way, but all the tools and resources you need are out there. I know it’s an overused phrase, but if I can do this, you can too. The key is patience, persistence, and always learning. Do something to move your affiliate marketing business forward each day, even if it’s just for a few hours, and by this time next year, who knows where you’ll be?

This post was so helpful! I launched my blog in January and just started to try and monetize it in June. This book has many similarities to Seth Godin’s books and also is like a deep dive into Malcolm Gladwell’s “stickiness factors.” Two key principles that stick out are that people will share your content if it makes them look good and that if you build your product or service around a ‘trigger,’ you’ll receive a bump in traffic and/or sales every time they encounter that trigger. A terribly effective reminder is Rebecca Black’s song “Friday” which gets a bump in traffic on a certain day of the week, every week years after its initial release.

I honestly think some of us just have non-buying audiences. Some of that may be a matter of how or what we write but some of it might just be the niche. They don’t HAVE money to spend if it’s not on essentials. So there’s got to be a balance, I think, between recognizing what we could do differently to improve conversions, and recognizing the reality of our audiences.

This section of the analysis will detail the economic climate, the online advertising and e-commerce industry, the customer profile, and the competition that the business will face as it progresses through its business operations. Currently, the economic market condition in the United States is in recession. This slowdown in the economy has also greatly impacted real estate sales, which has halted to historical lows.
